10 tips to increase willpower as you lose weight

Weight loss is not easy, it is usually a long, arduous process, but it doesn’t have to be.  Sometimes you want to give up and eat whatever you come across.  Successful weight loss requires a lifestyle change to not only get the weight off but, most importantly, to keep it off.

Willpower is defined as the ability to delay gratification and resist short-term temptation to achieve long-term goals.  To increase your willpower, you must focus and have a clear mindset.

Here are a few tips to help you increase your willpower as you continue your weight loss journey.

1. Believe in Yourself

Believe in yourself that you can do anything you set your mind to succeed and achieve your life goals. Always remember that the first person who believes in you will still be you.

In weight loss, if you don’t believe that you can do it, who will? It is up to you to be motivated and be determined to finish what you started.

2. SMART Goals

Setting Goals should be SMART. It should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Developing tangible and clear goals will help you be focused and committed to your weight loss journey.

3. Plan

After setting out your goals, you need to plan. This plan will be the foundation to help you achieve your goals and objectives. It is good to write out the who, what, when, where, why, and how of your weight loss plan and stick it to a place that you always look at, like the mirror or the refrigerator.  This strategy will still help you remember why you are doing it first and boost your willpower.

4. Be Busy

Dieting will make you crave and think of food a lot, especially when you are hungry. It is hard to resist the temptation of food, even just the sight and smell. What you can do is be busy, be active, or keep your mind occupied.

Do some exercise, spend time with your family, go for a long walk, and do some activities to help you not get side-tracked and strengthen your willpower as you go through weight loss.

5. Reduce Stress

Stress is one factor that can cause you to be fat and have unwanted belly fat. It can also make you crave high-sugary food and carbohydrate-rich food. It also affects your mental capacity to be healthy, which lowers your willpower to achieve weight loss.

Treating yourself to a massage, taking up yoga, a long walk, listening to music, or just watching the movie will help you reduce stress and ease your mind to increase your willpower to push through your plans. Reduce Stress with A New You Spa Treatment Services.

6. Get a Good Support Group

7. Resist Temptation

You can resist temptation by starting at your home. The first thing you need to do is remove unhealthy food options and change to a healthier food version. If you have a family member who is not healthy, you need to separate your food from them or try to convince them to start eating healthy food.

Try or practice cooking your meal and eating at home rather than eating outside to avoid temptation. You can also prepare your home-cooked lunch meals when you go to work.

8. Practice Mindful Eating

Mindful eating means paying attention to the food that you eat. You can practice mindful eating by eating slowly, chewing food thoroughly, eliminating distraction while eating, eat in silence, focus on the food, and the most important is to stop eating when you are full.  In Japanese custom, one is to eat only until you are 80% full.  This eliminates the overeating aspect of Western Society.

9. Cheat Meal

The transition of diet is tough and can be very stressful. A cheat meal can help you suppress your cravings and prevents binges. A cheat meal doesn’t give you permission to over-eat. It is more about indulging your favorite food in a scheduled meal and returning to diet on the very next meal. This cheat meal helps you increase your willpower by conditioning your mind to eat your favorite meal after a weight-loss win, no matter how small.

10. Love yourself

It would be best if you were not too hard on yourself for weight loss and diet. It is normal to struggle. It is expected that you screw up your diet plan. The most important thing is loving yourself that way; you can recover, move-on, and start again.
